Premium members recently got a preview of how nicovideo live will look in the future and it seems like it’ll be easier to find videos after the update! We’ve got tags for broadcasts, a nicovideo-wide search and a simpler way to keep check on your favorite shows.

Nicovideo is known for its tags and how they often define the video. Users can change the tags, and they are doing so constantly. Sometimes they tell you what to expect but the tags can also serve as an reaction to the content. You can find warnings for grotesque scenes, remarks about the one who posted the video or just links to similar material.

Nicovideo live have now also that functionality. The broadcaster can write three tags himself and the rest is up to the viewers to add. It is so much easier to search for broadcasts now and you will find that the guys and girls broadcasting react to what they get tagged as. Now that’s categorizing people!

Better search

Remember how hard it was to find good shows? Remember when search just existed as an excuse to fill out space on http://live.nicovideo.jp? Well, it’s a bit better now. The search on both nicovideo.jp and live.nicovideo.jp is now unified and you can easily change between videos and live shows when you are searching for something. The search also shows directly how many results it has found which should lead to some interesting finds.

I’ll admit that searching in japanese might be one of the hardest things ever but it should be much easier to find what you are searching for with all of the data and material nicovideo has.

Always cruisin’

Nicovideo live cruise is a great way to find interesting broadcasts. It works like an automatic TV-zapper that changes the channel for you. Cruising is as simple as just sitting down and wait for a good show to come on. If you see something interesting you get the choice to lengthen your stay or continue cruising. If you really like what you see, just click a button to jump off the ship and watch the whole broadcast.

The new design doesn’t change cruise. It instead changes how you get on the ship. When searching for something on nicovideo live you’ll find that your favorite shows, scheduled broadcasts and a small cruise window is displayed to the right side of the list. This means that you can keep on looking for something that catches your eye and at the same time keep an eye on the cruise. What a wonderful world we live in!

The new nicovideo video player is now available for premium members of nicovideo.jp. The new player is redesigned and it finally supports 16:9 mode. I wish they would make it default to 16:9, but it seems to bug a bit with 4:3 video at the moment. Lets hope they fix that before the site-wide release.

The new player also manages to play full HD video without stuttering, which is definitely an improvement over the old player. Lets now hope that people will start making videos that take advantage of these updates.

You have to admit though… somehow they make it look worse with every version…

Nicovideo released an iPhone app for their normal videos about a year ago and it seems like iPhone users will finally be able to make live broadcasts. The app will behave very much like the ustream app and you will be able to get it in a couple of weeks.

Note that you need a nicovideo premium account to be able to broadcast live shows.
