Nicovideo ⑨ is here!

Yes, version nine of nicovideo is finally here! This time it’s a big rehaul of both the player, the sorting and even more functions have been added. Lets see what ⑨ has in store for us!

Groups

Instead of the big row of categories that nicovideo had before, it now has seven groups. Each of these seven have collected the previous categories and even added some new ones.

Entertainment – Music – Sports: Anything from TV shows to original music and sports
Culture – Life: Diaries, travel logs and videos from all over the world.
Politics: Speeches, rallies, protests and elections. Mostly Japanese politics
I did: People playing covers of their favorite songs, dancing and drawing
Anime – Games: Anime episodes, clips, remixes and mashups. Also people playing games, trailers from games and gaming culture
Idolm@ster – Touhou – Vocaloid: Mashups, remixes, original videos, gameplay videos, original songs and covers and much much more. Probably the biggest category on nicovideo!
R-18: Porn and other stuff not suited for children

A video can now have several categories. The latest one is the one it gets sorted after. If there are multiple category tags, the following will be displayed:

Watch Page
The latest tag. “There are multiple category tags” message appears

Search page
Search results are displayed as one category or tag

Rankings
The by the uploader prioritized tag will appear in the rankings

Category group, category home
“New video comment” portion of the video does not appear for any category

NicoReport

A new mypage where you can see what your favorite uploaders have done, what the communities you are following are discussing and when your favorite live users are having broadcasts. It’s also a profile page that collects all of your videos and information. You can now even upload a picture of yourself for other to see!

Watch list

Follow users you find interesting! Add them by clicking on the user profile link and then add to watch list.

Don’t want to show your profile to the world? Go to your user publishing preferences and click the bottom right button.

Video menu

Click the orange button at the bottom left of a video and you’ll get this menu with a lot of quick choices. I like the “more videos from same user” button the most.

Quick Mylist

After a video ends, a dialogue pops up and tells you that you can add it to a mylist for now – the quick mylist. This is especially good if you just want to keep track on the video for later. You can add up to 500 videos to the quick mylist. If you add more than 500 videos, the oldest will be removed. Keep that in mind and routinely move stuff you want to keep to another list.

The world of new videos

A nicovideo live program that brings attention to newly uploaded videos. All of the comments added during the live show will be added to the videos shown. This is a good chance for uploaders to get their creations the attention they deserve.

Time shift

Want to watch a live show but can’t find the time? Use time shift and watch it later! Reserve a seat and then watch the program within a limited time period. You can only do this a limited amount of times and have to pay for it if you use up the timeslip tickets you begin with.
Premium members have a better deal on the tickets than others.

New video top

The new top on the videos now has report reader, RSS reader and nicovideo live alerts! You are now able to find out when new stuff happens on nicovideo and when your favorite broadcasters have shows directly on nicovideo.

Want to add more RSS feeds to the reader? Go to the RSS feed for a mylist and copy-paste it into the RSS tab:

Unlimited video size/bitrate for premium uploaders

Have a premium account? Upload a lot of videos? Now you can upload any video at any video size and bitrate! Note that the video still has to keep the 100 Mb limit.

Embed videos everywhere

You can now embed nicovideo videos not only on mixi and livedoor, but everywhere. This makes life easier for many bloggers, like moemania. We will probably only upload rare videos to youtube from now on since this function has been introduced.

Go to the orange video menu and press post to blog at the bottom left to get the embed code:

Keep the header

You can now have easy access to the header with links to your mypage etc by making it follow your scrolling. Just click the arrow to the right and it’ll start following you when you go down a page.

MyMemory now preserves tags

MyMemory is a function that can save a video and its comments so you can watch with exactly the same comments later on. Now it also saves tags.
Add a video to MyMemory by clicking the button right over the video settings:

That’s about it for new functions! I love how users have more freedom to do what they want with the content on nico now. Too bad they didn’t change the design though…
