How to upload videos to Nicovideo.jp

Nicovideo.jp is as many of you know the equivalent of youtube, but for Japan. It has comments scrolling over video and is more anonymous, just like many japanese want it to be. It also allows longer videos than youtube.
This post will describe how to upload videos to nicovideo.jp!

Step 1: Make a nicovideo.jp account

Step 2: Go to smilevideo.jp and log in with your nicovideo.jp account information. The top box is your email and the bottom one is your password. You will be taken to a page that looks somewhat like this:

Step 3: Press the link called “動画の新規アップロード” which I have outlined in red. You will be taken to a page which has an EULA and settings for your video. You can now chose a video (DivX/XviD/MPEG1/MPEG2/WMV max 100Mb and FLV max 40Mb), if it’s 4:3 (fullscreen) or 16:9 (widescreen).

Step 4: Press the bottom button when you are done doing that and press OK to confirm that you want to upload the video. Wait a bit until the video is uploaded.

Step 5: Your upload is now automatically put in an encoding queue. Smilevideo will email you as soon as the encoding is done with a link to your video where you can edit some more information and choose the thumbnail.

Step 6: Chose a frame to represent your video, enter a title and a description and a category in the drop down box and then click the button.
You’re done!
Video privacy settings
You can find all kinds of privacy settings for your videos at smilevideo.jp where you also upload them. Press the Edit icon to the right of the uploaded video and you’ll find yourself at this screen:
Edit your settings as you see fit and then click the button on the bottom to save the settings. Note that you can only edit one video at the time or else smilevideo.jp will complain. This also applies to uploading videos, so make sure to only have one smilevideo.jp browser window open at the time.
You also have to be in a community and have the right permissions to be able to make a video community only.
Please upload a lot of moe videos, but be sure to not upload duplicates, ok?

When I press the upload button and then ok, the website seems to be “sending request to smile video” indefinately with no sign of upload progress. Do you know what the problem could be?

Are you sure that it is not uploading the video? It usually takes a really long time for large files.
I have also had some problems with certain web-browsers, such as Safari, that have trouble uploading files through web-forms. Maybe you can try another browser?

it wont let me in with my nico account. i tried it several times to rule any small faults i could have made out…. but it still wont log me in. :/

Are you sure that you are logging in with first your EMAIL (xxx@xxx.xxx) and then your password?
A lot of people try to log in with their username, which does not work.
Smilevideo.jp was also down some hours last weekend.

yeah of course, the same way i log in at nico. i even wrote it in a notepad file and copy past it… it worked for nico but didnt work for smilevideo.
well i dont want to bother you with this. ill try making a new account and try it again. thanks anyway :)

Click the red link next to the tags and then write in the tags you want. Separate them with spaces to add more than one at once. You can lock some tags by clicking the “star” to the right of them in the list. When you are done adding tags, click the bigger button below.

Can you tell me which catagory is which, like when submitting it to a category, because my Nico Nico Douga account got suspended, and I think it’s because I uploaded a video to the wrong category…

Can anyone tell me if there’s a problem with my upload?
Progress bar at the bottom of the screen is loading fairly quickly, but it stays at full and doesn’t load any further.
Is it still loading,? Or has the page crashed?

avi is just a wrapping. Nicovideo supports avi-wrapped DIVX, XVID encoded files, so it should be ok.

Is there a way to make my video clearer? It is a little fuzzy and blurry after uploading it to Nico Nico.

Make sure that you’re not watching it during economy-time that starts around 19.00 japanese time. What settings were you using? Best is to use a mp4 encoded file with the maximum bitrate of 600 Kbps for normal users. Also make sure that the video is 512×384(4:3) or 512×288(16:9).

Yeah, you can and it won’t look different at all. You can notice if the same person comments on the video by clicking the No Good User button and looking at the hash-code, but I doubt someone does that.

any limit on the size of mpeg file that can be uploaded? want to upload an mpeg file that is already on youtube at nico nico, but get a message saying file is too big – any suggestions?

FLV can be about ～40MB and MP4 should be about ～40MB too while other formats can reach a maximum of ～100MB.

I’ve tried uploading a few things, but I’m not certain that it’s publishing them. When I edit individual videos, they show up as public, but when I go to “Mí página” in Niconico, it shows up as “No publicar” and doesn’t seem to offer a way to change it.

When I press the upload button, it leaves me at the same page, but at the bottom taskbar, it says “sending request to http://www.smilevideo.jp. After like 2hours is brings me straight back to Smile Video home page. What happened?
Also, how do I navigate to my own videos?

It probably timed out. This can happen if the upload is too slow, but to be sure, login to your account at http://www.smilevideo.jp/ to see all of your uploaded videos.

You can’t see who comments on the videos, the comments are anonymous but you can block a users comment by clicking this NG button:

Hello. I was wondering…on NND, is embedding allowed? There’s this site called nicozon.net that lets people see NND videos without being a registered user.
Is there a way to disable embedding of your NND videos? Are there other privacy settings available for one’s videos? Thanks.

Embedding is allowed by default, yeah.
I know about nicozone and they use embedding to let others watch without registering. I think being able to comment is so much fun that just watching the videos that way is boring.

Um, okay, so I’ve got my video uploaded. but which category do I put it in? I’ve read the other comments and they suggest changing it to spanish…but I’m not good at languages and actually know far more Japanese than any other non-english language. I want to submit an UTAU song, so it’d be in a music category or something right? which is that?

The 殿堂入りカテゴリ (popular genres category) is pretty good for that. I don’t remember if there is a vocaloid category though, so look for that first. Then add the appropriate tags and you should be good to go!

Ok, first of all, I think I messed with some other things under the NG button because now the comment box is full of squares when I could see the japanese characters before. Second, whenever I go under this NG thing, I only ever see the same comment, and I apparently can’t select another. Third, is there some link for me to click that will show me all the videos that I have uploaded? It’s not under My List.

Squares sounds like an encoding problem. Check your View -> Text encoding settings in your browser and set it to shift-js or unicode depending on what it is right now.
You must first select a comment in the comment list and then press the NG button to NG it.
The videos you’ve uploaded will be at http://www.nicovideo.jp/my/video which you can find by going to your profile page and pressing the tab furthest to the right.

SOOO basically, when I go to upload a video, it doesn’t even give me anything to select a file with .___. I can’t even type or paste into the box where the file code/url would go or whatever it’s called. I don’t understand why since I’m logged in/registered and have no video space used up. I don’t know If it’s my internet settings or what -> I use the newest version of internet explorer.

It is not possible to receive notifications when people comment on the video. The uploaded videos should show up in your profile, you’re probably just in the wrong tab. Check out the rightmost tab in the profile: http://www.nicovideo.jp/my/video

It won’t let me log in using my account info either. I even made a new nico account and it still says that my password was wrong, even though I’ve checked and double checked it.
