How to register a user on nicovideo.jp

Nicovideo.jp is basically Japanese youtube, but with a lot of differences.

Nicovideo is a great site where you can find a lot of different types of videos, most of them from Japan. Highlights include Vocaloid songs and videos, boys and girls dancing/playing instruments in maid outfits, japanese game playthroughs, japanese tv- and radio-shows and much, much more.
You need an account to watch videos on nicovideo.jp, so just follow the instructions below to get an account☆
Register a nicovideo user
- Go to the registration page and click the big gray button:
- Enter your email:
- Then all you have to do is to fill in this form:
- Don’t forget to fill in your secret question! It doesn’t matter what you choose and write here, just something rememberable.
- You’ll see the terms of service at the bottom and you can just skip it and enter in the secret letter and press the button UNDER the box you type in the secret word. If you can’t read the secret word, the button to the right will give you a new one.
- You’ll get a confirmation e-mail after this, so wait for it and then click the link in it to activate your account!
Comment on videos
The main difference between nicovideo and youtube is that the comments scroll by on the video you watch, like such:
You can of course shut the comments off if you are annoyed by them, but I find them part of the charm. The comments are also anonymous and they get removed for new ones after a certain amount. The concept is basically like anonymous BBS:s, like 2ch.net or 4chan.org.
Here are some explanations to help you understand the comments:
“wwwww” means “lolololololol”
“神” basically means awesome, godly
“ktkr” basically means “omgomg”
“wktk” basically means “I’ve been waiting for this”
“ざわざわ・・・” means people mumbling, chatting.
Favorites
Now, lets imagine that you are in and browsing nicovideo and see something you want to save. This is where favorites come in. You need to create a favorite list by going into your mylists, clicking the bottom left button and then entering a name for the list in the text-box.
You can add videos to your favorites by clicking this button:
Download a video
But wait, what if you want to download a video? That’s easy too!
Drag this to your bookmarkbar and click it as soon as the video is loading: NND Download
or use Craving explorer, NicoNicoDownload (Adobe Air is needed) or Nico Watch Tools.
If you only want the audio, use nicomimi.com or nicosound.
Remember that you have to have the page where the video is freshly loaded to be able to download it!

EDIT: I think that account signups are on a hold right now. You cannot get an account right now. You have to wait until they let people sign up again.

How do you turn off the messages running across the video screen? You say it’s possible but I don’t know how to do it. My Japanese is still very limited. ^^;
I’m also unsure what you meant by adding that java script to our bookmarks… *computer illiterate*

Click the little bird icon that says “Comments” under it to the right of the volume control to disable comments.
To add javascript to your bookmarks, first make a bookmark and then edit it to paste in that script where you write the address.

Sometimes when I watch a video, a message pops up. I can’t highlight so I can’t C & P (sorry!), but idk what it says. The kanji’s small and difficult to read, because I’m still learning and it needs to be clear for me to have half a chance, lol. When that pops up, the time on the video increases, but the screen is black. The comments still scroll over it though. How can I get the videos to play?

It’s basically complaining about cookies. If you are using adblock, blocking cookies from certain videos, using a proxy, your browser in private mode or anything like that there is a risk that the cookies for the videos aren’t being used properly. Reload the page when you’ve made sure that the browser you are using accepts cookies from nicovideo.jp and the video should load.
It can also be that the video timed out because it took too long to load. Try to reload the page and try again.

Is it possible to upload your own avatar?
Also, I like watching Nico Nico Chorus videos – usually, the singers’ avatars are shown in the videos. If there isn’t a PM system, and avatars can’t be changed, how do the people who arrange the videos know which avatars to use?

No, sorry, you can’t upload your own avatar. You can create a community for yourself though where you can upload any image.
I’m pretty sure the ones who create the medleys and mixes use the community avatars or exchange skype contacts and organize the videos using that.

Sometimes when I go to a website that has a nico video embedded, the video is just black with comments scrolling across it. Is this a problem on my end, or is that how the video is supposed to be?

The black video probably has to do with the video not being able to load. I find that if I don’t leave the video loading before going to another tab or window, I usually get a black screen.
The error message there says that your email address or password is wrong, please enter the correct one and try again.

@asd It depends. Sometimes the user doesn’t want to show their other videos. I’d say that you should look at the tags for something like asdfP where the P usually stands for Producer. You can also look at the video description for a mylist/### which usually is a collection of their work

Hi! I seem to be having this problem and I’m guessing it has something to do with the question/answer thing. I entered everything in like I was supposed to but I keep getting this error:

I have a regular account on the website and I can’t login using my nickname or password (both of which I saved and automatically appear due to my computer’s autofill feature), and for whatever reason the site claims that I’m entering the wrong nickname/password. I tried to change both, but it won’t accept the changes. Did my nickname/password expire?
